Liebestraum was written for the ensemble Nordlys and is a recomposition of Franz Liszt’s famous piano work. The composition is saturated with rhythmic displacements – for example, the original 6/8 accompaniment is transformed into 5/8, while an additional violin voice is introduced in 4/8.

While the original is traditionally performed with significant rubato and fluid displacements between melody and accompaniment, this recomposition formalizes those gestures through polyrhythmic layers. This creates a paradox for the performers: to achieve the characteristic feeling of a romantic “old world” rubato, the ensemble must play with extreme rhythmic precision and restraint.
