”Jeg elsker dig”
[I love You] Op. 5, No. 3

arranged for clarinet in Bb, violin, cello and piano
by Martin Lohse

"I Love You" is from a collection of four songs for song and piano composed by Grieg in 1864. The songs are with lyrics by H.C. Andersen and is a selection from the collection Melodies of the Heart which H.C. Andersen wrote after falling in love with a merchant's daughter, Riborg Voigt, from Fåborg. However, she was already engaged to another side and got married shortly after.

I love you
You have become the single thought of my thoughts,
you are the first love of my heart.
I love you as no one else here on Earth,
I love you for time and eternity!
H.C. Andersen 1832
Nils Lid Hjort (translation)

Grieg also had a girl in mind when he wrote the four songs. They were completed in December 1864, and he was able to give the songs as a musical gift to his cousin, Nina Hagerup, for their engagement at Christmas 1864.

H.C. Andersen 1832
